Open-Source Models
- QWEN: Following the widespread community adoption of the Qwen3.5 and Qwen3.6 series, Alibaba introduced Qwen3.8-27B, the most capable generation in the Qwen open-model family to date. With 262K native context, Qwen3.8-27B delivers improvements across coding, work, research, and long-horizon tasks, outperforming Opus 4.6 and all previous Qwen model releases. - ORNITH: AI research lab Ornith released Ornith-1.5, a family of 397B MoE, 35B MoE, and 9B dense models built around a self-improvement loop where the model generates progressively harder tasks, task-specific scaffolds, and solution rollouts for reinforcement learning. It achieves SOTA among open-source models of comparable size and delivers performance comparable to Claude Opus 4.8 across reasoning, agentic, and coding tasks. - HARVEY: $11B legal AI startup Harvey released a research preview of Tenet, its first model post-trained for legal work. Built with Fireworks AI on a corpus of publicly available legal data simulating long-horizon legal work, Tenet raises the all-pass rate on Harvey's Legal Agent Benchmark (LAB) by 82% relative to the Kimi K3 base model it's built on. - IBM: IBM released Granite 4.2, a new family of open source AI models designed to power enterprise agents that can plan, reason, self-correct and reliably use tools to help automate complex enterprise workflows. Available in 3B, 8B, and 30B sizes under an Apache 2.0 license. Granite Speech 5.0 models can process roughly three hours of audio in one second using a single H100 GPU. [ref] [github] [25 AUG 2026]
Tools & Frameworks
- MILES: RadixArk, founded by AI infrastructure veterans from xAI and NVIDIA, released Miles v0.1: an open-source, production-ready RL and post-training framework for LLMs and multimodal models. Built around verified training, efficient hardware use, and scalable asynchronous rollouts, it supports Kimi, DeepSeek, Qwen, MiniMax, and more. It’s currently being used in frontier-model development across NVIDIA and AMD hardware. [ref] [blog] [19 AUG 2026]
- TRUEFOUNDRY: Agent infrastructure company TrueFoundry open-sourced TrueForge, a vendor-neutral agent harness built for aggressive context compaction, leaner tool loops, and self-hosted sandboxed execution. On 14 cross-system tasks, TrueForge matched Claude Managed Agents' solve rate on Opus 4.8 using 40% of the tokens at 30% lower cost, and was 75% cheaper on GLM-5.2 with no accuracy hit. - OPENAI: Open-source Codex harness can now serve as a reusable agent platform for building agents directly into existing products and workflows. The stack includes the Codex CLI, SDK, and app-server, allowing developers to manage persistent conversations, tool use, sandboxing, streamed execution, and approval flows while retaining control over their own interfaces, business context, and MCP tools. - LIQUIDAI: Boston-based AI company Liquid AI released Pipette, a model evaluation suite for on-device intelligence, in partnership with independent AI analysis platform Artificial Analysis. Pipette covers 10K+ benchmark results across 35 model classes, spanning phones, laptops, embedded hardware, and more. [ref] [24 AUG 2026]
- HEADLONG: Laude Institute and MIT released Headlong, an open-source framework for autonomous AI agents. Instead of waiting for a new prompt, the agent can pursue its own projects, revisit previous work, and message users when it has something useful to report. In testing, Laude’s internal agent autonomously found and fixed a bug in its own memory system in 48 minutes, without any human prompting. [ref] [25 AUG 2026]
**Policy & Partnerships **
- NVIDIA: Nvidia struck a $6 billion deal with Poolside, an AI foundation model company, to build one of the world’s most powerful open-weight AI models to compete with Chinese heavyweights like DeepSeek and Kimi K3. The chip designer will also invest $1 billion in Poolside and hire more than 100 of its engineers to work on Nvidia's open-weight Nemotron models. [ref] [22 AUG 2026]
- THINKING MACHINES: AI startup Thinking Machines is offering up to $50K in Tinker credits for open-weight model safety research. The grant program focuses on making models safer to release, with suggested directions that include hazardous data filtering, tamper-resistant safety training, and more. [ref] [blog] [25 AUG 2026]
What’s new at Sentient
- OPEN AGI REDDIT: Are you a researcher, developer, or builder who thinks AGI should belong to everyone? r/OpenAGI is a subreddit where the open-source AI community gathers to share what it's building, discuss what's changing, and learn together. [reddit]
- OPEN AGI BUILDERS DAY SHANGHAI: Sentient Foundation is heading to Shanghai, China to bring together AI founders, researchers, and builders to discuss the future of open-source AI. Co-hosted with Zhipu AI, the event focuses on what can actually be built with AI as model capabilities continue to advance. [RSVP] [19 SEP 2026]

Discussion
Everyone will quote the 48-minute bug fix. The feature I want is the boring one: an agent that knows when it's worth interrupting you. I've hired for fifteen years, humans rarely have that skill.
cool!
